It seems that Shyamalan must have his plot twists. Sometimes these are dramatic and unexpected, other times not. For me that's not the point. He gets an impressive performance from his actors and that's what counts. For me his films are more about the moments of tension which he produces with such aplomb.
My interest in Hayao films started with Laputa: Castle in the Sky many years ago. More recently, in order to get Laputa it was neccessary to buy the full set and it was well worth it. Although many of his films deal with the fantastic they can also give a surprising look onto real life. He is not afraid to deal with complex issues and feels animation is a perfectly suitable medium. His films are definitely not just for kids.
If you're looking for something strange you can't go far wrong with Terry Gilliam. His earlier work tended towards the funny, well hilarious actually, and his later work is more serious but equally good. Although The Brothers Grimm seemed more like traditional Hollywood fare he is one of the few directors who might properly adapt Good Omens for the big screen.
