Blindness

A city is struck by a plague of white blindness. The story follows the first to be infected as they are quarantined and conditions breakdown in an inadequate facility. Some very good blind acting and well shot scenes.

BenX

When this went through the cinema I think I discounted it. A film about roleplaying and games probably would probably be too full of inacuracies. However it turns out to be much more about autism. I'd liken it to The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)

I like the original and had already heard bad things about this before I went in. While I wouldn't say this is definitely a bad film, it's definitely not a good film. I don't know quite what audience they were going for but I don't think they hit any of them. The story doesn't make much sense, the action isn't that exciting, and the performances are unexceptional. The single thing that did catch my attention has been much talked about in sci-fi but I can't remember it on film (off the top of my head.)

The Fall

A man and a girl are being treated at the same hospital. They meet and the man tells a fantastic story of an evil govenor and the men who want revenge against him. The scenery and colours within this story are incredibly vivid. It reminded me of some sections of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It's worth a look.

Blake's Junction 7

A short film about what happens when the characters from Blake 7 take a break from their journey at one of our motorway service stations. It's short, it's strange, and it's funny. The DVD comes with a pair of similarly strange situtations involving Adam Ant in a supermarket and Big Daddy on a bus.

Man on a Wire

A French documentary about the man who walked on a tightrope between the towers of the World Trade Center. Prior to this he'd walked from Notre Dame and the Sidney Harbour Bridge. Each of these was organised in secret and resulted in him being arrested when he came down. Interesting film about an enthusiastic guy.

The Dark Knight

While a lot of my friends have really enjoyed it I've gotten stuck on how long it seemed. Half way through I'd gotten tired by the impressive special effects. I wanted to reach a conclusion and stop dancing around. It also, unfortunately, follows the superhero movie trend of having two bad guys in the second movie. Can we expect to have three bad guys in the third movie? I'd have far prefered a shorter film that created a second bad guy but left dealing with him to the next movie.

The Thirteenth Floor

This is an unexpectedly clever Hollywood film. A corporation has greated a virtual world which we can visit. It's full of virtual people living virtual lives. What happens when one of those people realises that everything around them is a lie? I managed to guess where this film was going but still enjoyed it. Maybe I'd seen it before back in the dim and distant past or maybe I've read some books dealing with similar ideas.

Wall-E

The latest Pixar creation continues their tradition of fine animated features. It's a sweet story and looks amazing. Wall-E himself is great fun and not having a voice makes the animators work all the harder.

The Happening

The trailer for this film is fairly mysterious and I don't want to spoil it for anyone. Something is going on, it's bad, and it's not clear exactly why it's happening. This film manages to achieve a lot while avoiding many graphic scenes that it could have included.
