The House on the Borderland, William Hope Hodgson

I just listen to an abridged audio adaptation of this story. I've also read the story some time ago. Some friends who've gone to the countryside finishing find a diary in an old ruin. Inside is a strange tale which might be real or might be the ravings of a mad man. It tells of psychic journeys to far off places in the future and the visitation on the present of a race of swine-man. While there are connections between the events a convient explaination is never given.

Last and First Men, Olaf Stapledon

This book is very different. It's not so much a story as a history. A history of the entire human race from the first race of man in the present day to the eighteenth race of man some two billion years hence. It takes some getting use to the format and I found the first third of the book, dealing with the first man, to be less interesting. However it is worth going on. I can't help but be impressed by the scale of this book.

The Fifth Head of Cerberus, Gene Wolfe

A trio of connected stories set on a pair of twin worlds. Have the aboriginals of the twin worlds taken on human form to live among the colonists? Unfortunately although the stories had potential I didn't think there was enough of any of them to be satisfying.

The Tripods - Series Two

Although I saw the original series broadcast back in the 1980s I don't think I ever this sequel. If you remember the original then you might be interested to see what happens inside the City of Gold. On the other hand maybe your imaginiation has better special effects than this. Unfortunately this is the last of the television series so you never get to find out what happens in the end. Maybe it would be better to go and read the books.

The Happening

The trailer for this film is fairly mysterious and I don't want to spoil it for anyone. Something is going on, it's bad, and it's not clear exactly why it's happening. This film manages to achieve a lot while avoiding many graphic scenes that it could have included.

Handcock

I was suprised by this film. From the trailer I was expecting it to be fun but, as a big Hollywood blockbuster, not much else. It was fun to watch someone who was on one hand a superhero and on the other hand a drunk. He saves a public relation guy who in turn wants to change things for him. However there's more and I suggest you watch the film to find out what.

Quarantine, Greg Egan

In this world people are able to re-wire their brains using neural mods. Want a phone inside your head, a travel guide, or a hallucination to replace your dead wife? They are all available at your local nanoware shop. The story follows a detective trying to find an immobile brain damaged patient who has disappeared from hospital.

The Day After Tomorrow, Robert Heinlein

A short book from way back in 1949 about the defeat of American by PanAsian forces. A subsequent guerilla action is started based on an almost magical new technology and a fake religion. I tend to read this as a quick and fun distraction.

RESTful Web Services, Leonard Richardson & Sam Ruby

Learning to create web services in a RESTful, or object-oriented, way. I found this an attractive method but haven't used it in practice yet. Read more about this in a summary of RESTful.

The Fountains of Paradise, Arthur C. Clarke

This story describes the planning and construction of the world's first space elevator. This book was published later than I expected, 1979. It has won the Hugo and Nebula awards and I think it deserves them.
