A future where online role-playing combines with real life. Immersive goggles let you play in any number of worlds. This book had some clever ideas about augmented reality and some warnings about blurring the line between fantasy and reality.
This books takes us through the history of Britain from pre-Roman times through to the present day. It's interesting to see how different food use to be, what and why people ate what they did.
Really enjoyed listening to this on
Escape Pod. It's a science fiction story set after genetic engineering has changed society. People can now be specialised to perform specific function, such as the Arties mentioned in the title. Most striking is the story's slang, you have to dive in at the deep end and just work out what they're talking about.
I was disappointed in this after reading other of Nix's work. It didn't have any clever new ideas. I didn't end up identifying with any of the characters. There fight against the Ragwitch proceeded uncomfortably easily. For the right age group the Ragwitch probably makes and "good" bad guy.
A reasonable collection of fantasy short stories. It only has one from the universe of
the wall.
